1st Xl - A numbers game again as legs tire..
Some bright attacking play
Kent & Sussex Regional 1
Sutton Valence 1st Xl 2 : 8 Lewes 1st Xl
A numbers game, again as legs tire...
Sutton Valence were matched with Lewes at home and with only 11, Valence prepared themselves for what they knew would be a very strong opposition. Despite this, Valence came out of the blocks positively and contested well all over the pitch. The first 15 minutes flew by and Valence found themselves being awarded a penalty corner. The ball was injected to Alex Stamp who found Fred McVarish to make the score 1-0 to Valence.
Lewes responded well, too well if anything, as they now started to shake off their hour-long journey and to find their key player and star striker who managed to score 3 goals in very quick succession. Valence refused to drop their heads and managed to re-gain some territory in the opposition’s third and were rewarded, after some hard work, with another penalty corner. A slight change of tactics saw the ball injected to Stanford who managed to find the back of the net with a drag flick. Half time approached and unfortunately for Valence, Lewes were able to score one more before the half. 2-4.
Despite a calm and collected team talk by Henry Robinson, tired legs began to show, and it proved difficult to combat Lewes’ 15 man-strong squad. Lewes came out of the blocks incredibly quickly and again managed to find their key player several times resulting in his double hat trick to make the score 7-2. Valence battled on and showed great spirit but after a hard-fought game the score ended 8-2 to Lewes.
