1st Xl push Bordenians away
Kirkham leads the way
On an unusually sunny day in October Sutton Valence travelled down to Sittingbourne to face co-leaders Old Bordenians. Having hastily grabbed together a mixture of green tour shirts (after losing the away shirts previously, Chairman Lewis Mitchell had decided the away shirts were safer in his London flat - a long way from Sittingbourne).
It was a cagey start with Sutton Valence taking the lead with Kirkham smashing the ball over the keeper from the top of the D after a short corner. But soon after, a couple of lapses and a wayward aerial by ‘out of the park’ Ricky O’Neil, saw Valence trailing 1-2. Kirkham soon equalised though, after receiving the ball from Angel in the 25 taking the ball into the D, his reverse stick shot beating the keeper.
Valence then won some short corners but were unable to convert. Old Bordenians fought back but Young in goal was solid. A good move down the right-hand side saw Kirkham get his third. 3-2 Valence. Some good team play then led to Mitchell picking up the ball in the D, the keeper saving the first attempt but Mitchell buried the follow up. Another good move soon after saw Mitchell setting up Willson to score Valence’s 5th.
Old Bordenians stepped up their effort and caused lots of problems for Valence, who eventually conceded to make the score 5-3. The result was by no means guaranteed at this point with the home team creating numerous chances. Valence however found their form again to close the game out 5-3 to stay on maximum points this season.
