1st Xl’s fourth win

Now in second place
Yet another balmy October Saturday saw Sutton Valence host Gillingham Anchorians in a Kent Open Premier A league clash. The two teams at polar opposites to one another with the away team looking to secure a first win of the season and the home side looking to expand on an unbeaten run.
SV had the push back and from the opening exchanges it was clear they had the upper hand, but would they be able to maintain the control throughout the game? The home side dominated possession and passed the ball confidently, patiently building each attack. Despite several opportunities and a few short corners SV were unable to break the dead lock in the first half and more often than not were defied by the Gillingham keeper. Anchorian’s possession was stifled and they were unable to sustain any control in the opening half.
The second half ensued in much the same manner and despite some impressive keeping it was more a matter of when and not if SV would score. The “when” was the 8th minute with Dion Ashton making the first of three on his first outing this season. Five minutes later he was celebrating his second. Despite the SV control of the game the visitors were able to challenge in the SV D but the resulting short corner effort was deflected for a long which was subsequently snuffed out by SV’s defensive quartet. Alex Stamp eventually found the backboard in the 59th minute after coming close a few times earlier in the game and with 3 minutes to go Dion Ashton claimed his third and the team’s fourth and final goal of the game.
