1st Xl lose and slip to second
By Paul Linaker
Still have game in hand
This fixture had all the credentials to be the game of the season. First place against second, and the only side to have beaten Sutton Valence this season.
The home team started well and took an early lead with Andy Turnill converting from a short corner. New Beccs responded strongly and though initially denied by Valence stand-in keeper, Ryan Robinson, the score was soon levelled following a mistake from Valence at an attacking short corner and subsequently getting caught on the counter-attack. The first goal was all the momentum the visitors needed. Valence played with their formation and used their substitutes but failed to regain any control. In pursuit of goals they started to leave themselves open and soon went behind. New Beccs scored four unanswered goals, 2 either side of half time before Valence replied through Kevin Kirkham, by which time the game was beyond saving and to add insult to injury the visitors had the last word. Sutton Valence will rue missed chances once again and although they still have a game in hand, they have relinquished the top spot to New Beccs.
The final run-in to the end of the season promises to be a close affair and may well come down to Sutton Valence’s postponed match against Gillingham Anchorians.
