Ash show no heat
An open day at the senior school forced a change in venue for Sutton Valence’s home game against Burnt Ash, and a blustery morning it was that welcomed them to the junior school’s Astro.
Valence started well and early pressure was rewarded with a short corner but the drag flick attempt was wide of its mark. Valence’s dominance in the first half saw them win four further short corners in the half but flicks were off target and saves from the visiting keeper denied the home team. Unable to score from the set piece it would come to open play for Valence to break the dead lock in the 23rd minute. Fred McVarish having picked the ball up outside the D, driving in and picking his spot beyond the reaches of the travelling keeper. Valence took the one goal deficit into the break but it should have been a few more.
Sutton Valence set out in the second half looking to build and improve on the first. Although some great lines were being run, decision making was off and the passes weren’t being found. They didn’t take long either, as McVarish was on hand to assist in Valence’s second goal, scorer turned provider, putting Kirkham through for his first 4 minutes in. 2 minutes later Kirkham doubled his tally, controlling the ball on the up before firing home. Valence continued to dominate possession and went four up 10 minutes from time. Davies finding himself in space and putting Mitchell through into the D to slot home. Turnill was finally rewarded for his efforts having come close to scoring on a number of occasions and picked up a brace in the last ten minutes game. His first 4 minutes from time through dogged determination, steadying himself despite the attention of a couple of defenders, making room and finding the back board. His second and the final goal of the game came 2 minutes from time courtesy of McVarish who rocketed the ball into the D and Turnill deftly turned it into the goal to close out the scoring for the day.
At the back Sutton Valence were strong and unyielding throughout cutting out any visitors advances. Blanchard in particular had a good game. Burnt Ash battled throughout and almost found a consolation goal in the dying minutes through a succession of short corners but the home team’s defence held.
Sutton Valence now just need two points from their remaining two games to win the league and next week visit third placed K-sport with an opportunity to close out the top spot with a game to spare.
