Local derby raises the Barr

Local derby raises the Barr

With 3 points already bagged in the first game of the season, Sutton Valence were looking to double their tally against local rivals Marden.

Marden edged possession at the start of the first half and were first to strike with their goal coming from open play. Sutton Valence may have conceded early in the half, but they showed their quality by equalising within 5 minutes courtesy of Andy Barr. The half continued with both teams taking it in turn to attack each other’s goals, with Marden coming the closest to scoring, only to be denied by the left SV goal post. The half finished 1-1, with both teams thinking they could take all 3 points.

The second half saw both teams move the ball well, but it was Sutton Valence’s turn to strike first in the half, with Andy Barr scoring his second goal of the game. With a 1 goal cushion, Marden had to chase the game, which stretched play and created more space on the pitch. As the half progressed SV looked the more controlled team, passing the ball well in all areas of the pitch. Chris Sheldon found himself at the top of the Marden D in the final 5 minutes, and a shot to the bottom left corner beat both defenders and keeper to give SV a 3-1 lead. In the closing stages of the game SV couldn’t let their concentration levels drop like the previous week. Instead of opting to drop deep and defend, the SV team pressed Marden high up the pitch making it difficult for them to get the ball out of their own half.

The game finished with SV taking 3 points and bragging rights (at least for this side of Christmas). It was a solid team performance, where everyone performed well and contributed to the win, but Andy Barr stood out with his 2 goals and was awarded man of the match. SV also say goodbye to Freddie Hulbert’s for this season as he heads off to Australia for 6 months.

Next week Sutton Valence 2nd XI take on Ashford in a top of the table clash.
