2nd Xl Clinical short corners secure the win
By Mark Whitmill
Now lying third
Playing with a bare 11 didn’t faze the in-form Sutton Valence 2nd Xl, as they took an early lead in the first five minutes from a short corner thanks to Bob Bartlett, who stepped up to play though he was carrying an injury. The half continued with Valence taking the majority of possession, and even when they didn’t have the ball Sevenoaks rarely troubled their defence. Part way through the half Sutton Valence were awarded another short corner, which saw Sebastian O’Leary extend their lead and to finish the half 2 : 0 to the home team.
Although in control of the game, Valence’s half-time team talk revolved around ball retention and continuing to be first on the ball. But Sevenoaks also had plans to improve their performance and Valence conceded an early goal, cutting their lead in half. Momentum was very much with Sevenoaks, but Sutton Valence rode the early pressure without conceding another goal and eventually returned to the form that was so successful in the first half.
Although struggling to score from open play Valence were deadly at short corners, scoring another three times through them, once from Sebastian O’Leary again and twice from Johnny Walker. The game ended 5 : 1 to Valence, who’s goals all came from set pieces.
