2nd Xl - High wind with an equally high goal count
By Paul Linaker
Retain 5th position with a game in hand
Sutton Valence 2nd XI travelled to Sevenoaks with a bare 11 and on the windiest day of the year. It was so
windy in fact the goals occasionally nearly tipped over. With only 1 goalkeeper in the whole club available this week for Sutton Valence, Captain Mark Whitmill reluctantly stood between the sticks.
Valence started the first 5 minutes strongly, keeping possession well, but soon fell apart and somehow found themselves 3 goals down in the space of 10 minutes. The third goal clearly provoked a reaction as Sutton Valence looked to drag themselves back into the fixture and drag themselves back they did. Just like Sevenoaks, they scored 3 quick goals, the first and third by Chris Sheldon and the second by Andy Barr. Valence went into half-time with everything all square, but with momentum behind them.
The second half started much like the first with Sutton Valence retaining the ball for the first 5 minutes and but they conceded 2 goals early on. SV continued the half apply more pressure, but were unable to convert the short corner after short corner routine, with Chris Sheldon striking everything left of the goal. With every missed chance it started to feel like it was going to be one of those days where not everything would quite go to plan.
The game ended 5-3 with SV feeling at times they were the much better team, but Sevenoaks were more clinical in front of goal. This leaves them in 5th position, with a game in hand.
