Black Knights win jousting contest
First choice helps Vets
Black Knights 4 : 1 Sutton Valence (Lewis Mitchell)
With only five outfield players available, and no regular keeper, Sutton Valence Vets had again to resort to getting help. Rupert Humphrey, currently unable to play out due to knee problems, bravely opted once more to be keeper and as ‘acting Manager’ took up the generous offers from Chris Johnson and Lewis Mitchell to come on straight after their home game against Old Willies, and from Paul White and his young son Ollie from Black Knights to make numbers up to ten per side. The game started pretty evenly, with good defending from White, McVarish, and Nettle, and Humphrey showing good anticipation. Bell, Johnson and Mills linked well with Mitchell and the wingers, White Jnr and Linaker getting the ball into Black Knights’ territory.
Black Knights started to break through Valence’s defence, managing to score twice from short corners and once from open play, but by half time Valence had, whilst failing to convert from short corners themselves, got one open play goal from a sizzling shot from Lewis Michell. The second half was more even, with Black Knights only managing one more goal as the light faded (literally).
Johnson’s and Mitchell’s mobility and skill stood out and could have created an uneven game had they gone for personal goals, but they played the game in a very sporting fashion by getting the ball to other players, particularly both wings. Linaker had several opportunities but failed, again, to connect and Andrew McVarish went very close from a short corner.
So the enjoyable game which could, and probably should, have been a draw, ended with a win for Black Knights.
As an aside, Chris Johnson and Lewis Mitchell’s agreement to play for the Vets means that they have turned out for all of the Mens’ teams at some point this season. Have to say they looked pretty comfortable as Vets!
