Match Report: Blackheath vs Sutton Valence
Sutton Valence produced a strong, spirited display away at Blackheath in challenging conditions late in the day, eventually going down 2–1 in a tightly contested match. Played under poor-quality lighting and a persistent drizzle, both sides had to work hard to maintain control and precision throughout an entertaining encounter.
The first half ended goalless, but it was an engaging contest. Blackheath impressed with their slick, accurate passing and composed build-up play, while Sutton Valence defended superbly and threatened on the counter. Despite the difficult conditions, the quality of hockey remained high, with both teams showing great commitment and technical ability.
Blackheath finally broke through in the 55th minute, converting from a well-executed short corner before adding a second ten minutes later — a scrappy and slightly fortunate goal that took a deflection before finding its way over the line. Sutton Valence, undeterred, continued to push forward and were rewarded three minutes from time with a truly remarkable team goal.
The move began with Ali Robinson — who had, for once, left his tree-felling axe at home — winning possession in midfield. After a particularly harsh tackle from a teenage opponent, Ali appeared to sustain a rib injury, but in typically fearless fashion, he metaphorically tore it out of his own chest, dribbled past several Blackheath players, and slipped a perfectly weighted pass to Duncan Field. Duncan then delivered a pinpoint ball to Jonah Harcourt, who finished expertly to make it 2–1.
Jonah was a standout performer throughout the match, showcasing excellent skill on the ball, weaving past defenders and driving the team forward. His close control and determination caused Blackheath’s defence real problems, and he was unlucky not to score earlier after being denied on multiple occasions by some excellent goalkeeping. In addition to his attacking threat, Jonah put in several strong tackles, working tirelessly at both ends of the pitch.
Zac Blanchard was equally tireless in midfield, linking play effectively and driving the team forward. Andrew Hornsey — usually found in goal — impressed on his outfield debut, adapting quickly and contributing with energy and determination. At the back, Dave “The Save” lived up to his nickname, producing a string of fine stops to keep Sutton Valence in contention.
While the result didn’t go Sutton Valence’s way, the all-round team performance was full of positives — commitment, structure, and resilience in difficult conditions. And as a consolation, the post-match teas were surprisingly good, helping to erase memories of last year’s less-than-memorable offering.
Final score: Blackheath 2 – 1 Sutton Valence.
