Sutton Valence 1st XI kicked off their 2024/25 season with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Holcombe 5th XI at Sutton Valence School. The match saw both teams battle for control but finish level at the end.
The first half was a tale of missed chances. Holcombe came close to opening the scoring early, but Sutton Valence held firm, with goalkeeper Stewart Young making some important saves. Up at the other end, stand-in captain Alex Stamp nearly broke the deadlock but was denied by the Holcombe keeper, leaving the half-time score at 0-0.
The second half sprang to life just five minutes in when Holcombe struck first to take the lead. Sutton Valence responded quickly, with Henry Robinson calmly slotting home after 46 minutes to level the match. Fred McVarish had the chance to put the hosts ahead with a penalty flick, but unfortunately succumbed to the pressure of the moment. Holcombe capitalised on their reprieve and regained the lead in the 56th minute. However, Sutton Valence’s left back, Dickie Turnill, found a rare goal in the 62nd minute to make it 2-2 and secure the draw.
Andy Turnill was named Man of the Match despite his absence running an ultramarathon, while Lewis Mitchell earned Dick of the Day for enjoying champagne in a hot tub instead of playing.
The match saw an emotional farewell for Jack Davies- his last for Sutton Valence as he moves to Cornwall.
