The new reformed Sutton Valence Ladies played their first league game of the season. For many it was a first having just found or renewed their love for hockey. For others it was their first taste of adult league hockey having come up the ranks from the juniors. The weather was warm (too warm!) and we were hosted by Gore court at the Westlands School.
The game started with enthusiasm and possibly a few nerves but we were off. To start with the team seemed settled and we were on the attack. Unfortunately, gaps did appear letting Gore Court have the space to head towards our defense. With a few short corners given we had by the end of the first half had conceded 4 goals. Half time proved to be very positive though with much talk of triangles, marking, defense support and much needed hydration!
The second half everyone had taken it all in and there was far more time spent on the attack. Confidence had grown, everyone was digging deep and there was more than a few great attempts of goal shots that only just got saved by the opposition. With only 2 goals conceded the second half had felt much more of a flowing game from our new team.
In all the number of goals saved and attempted did not reflect the final score and all the players should be proud of their game. The morning ending with a score of 6 nil to Gore Court but what this did not show was the determination and valiant effort all had put in. It is onwards and upwards for the new SV Ladies.
Thank you to Gore court for their great umpiring and hosting our first game.
Voted by the team: Frankie was our Lady of the Week having played an outstanding game in mid field.
