Withdrawal of old 1st Xl from Kent & Sussex Division 2

SUTTON VALENCE HOCKEY CLUB
PRESS RELEASE

At the end of last season Sutton Valence Hockey Club’s 1st Xl were demoted from Kent & Sussex Division 1 having not won a game, despite being promoted the previous season. The main reason for this was not the quality of the existing players, but having a squad that was too small for match days, which led to most games being lost in the 4th quarter due to fatigue coming quite naturally from 11 against 15 players.
Following the end of the season efforts were made by the Club to find additional players to bolster their position this season in Kent & Sussex Division 2. This work continued up to the Club’s Open Day on the 9th September.
Unfortunately, it became clear that rather than being successful in increasing numbers the reverse was happening as some of the previous Xl decided to move on. Rather than subject the remaining players, and the League, to an even worse situation than last season, the Club decided that it had no option but to remove the team from the League, and this was notified appropriately.
The Club remains focussed on its remaining three Men’s League teams; the 1st Xl playing in Kent Open Premier A, the 2nd Xl in Kent Open Premier C and the 3rd Xl, promoted this season, in Kent Open Division 3. The Club is delighted that coaching will once again be led by Gary Pankhurst, whose previous success with the Club made him a firm favourite with players. The season’s objectives have been identified and the Club will continue to seek to attract more players.
Besides the Men’s League teams, the Club has a successful Men’s Vets team playing friendlies in the Southern Counties’ Hockey Conference, growing interest in re-establishing Women’s hockey, and a very successful Junior Section for both boys and girls.
