Kent Open League – Premier A
Sutton Valence 2nd Xl 0 : 3 Folkestone Optimist 3rd Xl
Folkestone’s 2018 Turnaround is Complete
Some might say a wolf in sheep’s clothing, some might call it a bunch of ringers. The fact is the Folkestone
team were dressed in blue and they were badged 3rd team, so we had to play them.
The opening quarter was even. It was mainly Folkestone pressure, but Sutton Valence were absorbing it
and looked menacing on the counter attack. The Robinsons combined to create chances. Lewis and Jack
were trying to drive things forward in the mid field and were creating opportunities.
Up steps the enigmatic Sutton Valence right back, comfortable on the ball, he could have made an easy
pass to Ryan Robinson on the right wing. However, the worldie cross pitch ball to Hodges was on, or at
least that’s what he thought. It wasn’t. Kieran, the thrusting Folkestone youngster picked it up and drove at
the SV D. A long corner, led to a short corner, which led to a goal. 1 Nil.
Shortly after Folkestone added a second. The ball bounced over Ife’s stick, through Turnill’s legs and
landed perfectly for Folkestone to double their lead. 2 Nil.
Folkestone pressed forward again and found the SV defence on a Summer break. 3 Nil.
The half time speech was a simple. Let’s just forget about the score and play the second half.
The home team attacked and defended well. The score in the second half was 0-0. It was quite an
enjoyable, hard fought encounter in the sunshine.
The half was memorable for three reasons;
- DT was assaulted by and angry teenager, the umpire saw the incident but chose not to take any
action, because he didn’t see the build-up (which was DT stopped running and the angry youth ran
into him)
- Steve Parker got sin binned!?!
- We wished Rob Ife a fond farewell for the second time… He will be back. Right?
I hear the umpires of the Kent A league are still celebrating having heard that he is leaving…
To conclude, we beat both Folkestone teams in Autumn 2017. In Spring 2018 (when their other teams were
not playing) we lost to both Folkestone teams.
So 3 Nil final score. Enough said. Have a good summer. See you in September.
