Sutton Valence 1s travelled to Ramsgate on Saturday determined to take a scalp against Cliftonville, who had put together a strong run of performances in recent weeks. With several away wins behind us, the squad arrived confident and focused, even if the combination of wind and “unique” pitch conditions suggested it might not be a straightforward afternoon.

From pushback Sutton Valence looked composed. Ball retention was strong, and sharp movement through the midfield by Barney and Lewis created multiple breakaway opportunities that unsettled the Cliftonville defence. The game was open and evenly contested, with quick transitions and both sides switching play effectively.
Despite a period of sustained Cliftonville pressure in our half, Sutton Valence’s defensive unit stood firm, our back four serving several disciplined and committed interventions. However, a lapse in concentration allowed Cliftonville to capitalise, getting a shot away that found the back of goal to give them the lead. Shortly after, Sutton Valence were reduced to ten men following a questionable green card, leaving the side temporarily under pressure. The response, however, was immediate and emphatic. Refusing to be rattled, Sutton Valence equalised through Stampy, finishing superbly to level the scores at 1–1, a strike of such quality that it has already entered early discussions for goal-of-the-season honours (self-nominated, at least). The half ended all square at 1–1, reflecting a competitive and high-tempo opening 35 minutes.

Sutton Valence earned five short corners across the match but were unable to convert, with the conversion rate ultimately proving costly. One corner resulted in an unfortunate moment as an unpredictable bounce from a dodgy surface struck Ted in the face, he continued regardless, sporting a rapidly developing eye that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a boxing undercard.

The second half became increasingly open, chaotic and physical. The opposition grew progressively vocal — appealing, questioning and effectively auditioning for a punditry role at every opportunity (save it for the podcast, boys). Slacko’s patience wore thin, and a yellow card for dissent followed. In the midst of it all, Sutton Valence abandoned their usual structured ball movement, choosing instead to run into contact and force play, a shift that suited Cliftonville far more than ourselves. As the final quarter progressed, concentration levels dipped and fatigue began to show. Even standout defensive displays, including a crucial goal line save by DT couldn’t stop Cliftonville’s offensive scoring three times in the final 20 minutes to put the game beyond reach and secure a 4–1 victory.

A frustrating result for Sutton Valence, particularly after a well-matched first half that ended 1–1. The inability to convert short corners and a loss of composure in the final stages ultimately allowed the game to run away from us. There were positive passages and clear evidence of attacking threat, but maintaining structure, composure and concentration for the full 70 minutes will be essential moving forward.
