2s slide back towards the top

Sutton Valence 2's welcomed BBHC to the Underhill rink last Saturday morning. With a strong XI selected they started with the skippers rousing words ringing in their ears to realise that only ten had arrived and the midfield maestro Wilcher was still at home stuck on 3 across or unable to find his astro shoes again.

But perhaps ten is the magic number. When Wilcher did arrive he could only stand, for what seemed like quite some time, and marvel at Sutton Valence's ability to move the ball from side to side and quite unbelievably from red to red. These lateral moves orchestrated by the ever present Jimmy the Kid looked like the real thing.

With the words, "it couldn't get any worse than last week" still ringing in his ears the evergreen Wilcher joined the fray and along with his dynamic midfield partner Willson, who seemed to have brought his one armed stick blocking doppelgänger with him from BBHC this week, set about controlling the game. Untroubled and at times even fluent Sutton Valence built pressure and soaked up the occasional aggressive foray from their opponents. Eventually they remembered to pass through the right channel and it was left to Angel to waltz through the BBHC defence to score one of his finest and to save us dribbling it of the back again. 1-0.

And so it would remain. As tempers frayed and legs buckled Sutton Valence continued to ride the roller coaster of near misses and internal squabbles. The not so Young in goal continued to thwart any small advances from the opposition and the back line remained unbroken if not entirely untroubled. As the game progressed Angel was now proving himself to be both the MVP and teams leading actor/vocalist. Ife and Lee now reduced to the chorus as Angel remonstrated with any who would listen.

A solid performance, marred only by a mugging for Wilcher which caused much deliberation for the men in orange and knock on the head for Willson, bodes well for this weeks trip to the newly laid carpet in Gillingham.
