Sutton Valance delivered a strong and composed performance but were ultimately left frustrated as Old Williamsonians emerged victorious despite spending long periods under pressure. Sutton Valance began the match with real intent, moving the ball well through midfield and applying early pressure in the attacking circle. That pressure paid off when Sharpe gave Sutton Valance a deserved lead, finishing confidently to cap off a well-worked move.
Old Williamsonians responded positively and gradually grew into the contest, managing to find an equaliser midway through the first half. The game remained evenly contested, but despite Sutton Valance continuing to look the more threatening side, Old Williamsonians struck again late in the half to take the lead going into the break, punishing a rare lapse at the back.
The second half saw Sutton Valance firmly in control. They dominated possession, dictated the tempo, and spent extended periods camped in the Old Williamsonians’ half. Wave after wave of attacks were built patiently, but the home side struggled to convert their chances. Against the run of play, Old Williamsonians proved ruthless, scoring two goals on quick breakaways that caught Sutton Valance pushing high up the pitch.
Refusing to give up, Sutton Valance continued to press until the final whistle and were rewarded when Sheldon scored with a couple of minutes remaining, giving the home side hope of a late comeback. Despite their efforts, time ran out before Sutton Valance could find the equaliser their performance arguably deserved.
While the scoreline favoured Old Williamsonians, Sutton Valance were the stronger team on the day, showing quality, discipline, and attacking ambition throughout. The result did not fully reflect their dominance, and there were many positives to take into the next fixture against Canterbury away.
