Sutton Valence 8-1 Kings Hill
Sutton Valence 2nds produced an excellent all-round performance to defeat Kings Hill 8-1, building an unassailable 6-0 lead by half time thanks to some superb team hockey. From the opening whistle, Sutton Valence played some of their best hockey of the season. Crisp passing, intelligent movement, and excellent supporting runs repeatedly pulled the Kings Hill defence out of shape. The home side moved the ball quickly and purposefully, creating a stream of chances and maintaining relentless pressure.
The scoring was opened by Tom Willson, who finished confidently through the keeper’s legs, before adding a second soon after from a short corner. Willson then completed a first-half hat-trick to put SV firmly in control. Further well worked team goals, finished off confidently by Alex Stanford, Chris Sheldon, and Alex Hodges capped a dominant opening period, with Sutton's passing combinations and off-the-ball movement proving too much for the opposition as they established a deserved 6-0 advantage at half time.
The second half began with the 2nds looking to continue their dominance, and further strikes from Willson and Sheldon extended the lead to eight. However, despite adding to the scoreline, the overall performance lacked some of the cohesion that had characterised the first half. Sutton became more disjointed, with players occasionally opting for ambitious "Hollywood" passes rather than the simple option, while possession was sometimes held for too long instead of moving the ball quickly through the team. This disrupted the flow of play and allowed Kings Hill to enjoy a bit more possession and create a few opportunities of their own. They were rewarded for never giving up with a consolation goal, but there was never any doubt about the outcome as Valence comfortably saw out the match, missing a few more clear chances to get into double figures.
Willson was voted Player of the Match after an unusually clinical display in front of goal, helping himself to four goals and proving a constant threat throughout the game. But to be honest there were several candidates, particularly in the first half. Will Vanns showed that he’s becoming more comfortable in the team, displaying great composure on the ball. Another strong performer was Chris Stille, whose relentless running caused problems for the Kings Hill defence all afternoon. Although he was unlucky not to get his name on the scoresheet, his work rate and movement were instrumental in creating numerous chances for his teammates and played a major role in the team's attacking success.
While the scoreline was impressive, the biggest positive was the quality of the first-half hockey. If Sutton Valence can consistently replicate that level of passing, movement, and teamwork for the full 70 minutes, and do it against the better teams in the league, they will be a difficult side for anyone to stop this season.
