Imaginative start has unfortunate consequence.

A chilly Saturday lunchtime fixture saw the mighty Sutton Valence 4’s travel away to the murky depths of Medway for a friendly match against Holcombe 6’s.

The game set off in an unconventional manner, with Captain Nick Hall actually winning the toss, a feat never seen before.. certainly not this season as yet..

With SV pushing back in an accidentally unfriendly manner by cracking the ball off the back line, the game was underway. With Holcombe being in the league above, SV were unsure of what to expect, stepping up to the plate to make sure they did not fall behind early. SV made a number of early breaks into the Holcs D, with the keeper making some good saves. SV made one notable break, with some lovely 1-2’s up the pitch from the midfield ending with a slip to Rob Cockayne from Alex Stanford, and a cracking mid-air save by the Holcs Keeper.

The remainder of the first half saw some good hockey by SV, with a number of good attacks from both sides. The stalemate was eventually broken by a cheeky slip pass through the defence by Ben Grabham to Rob Cockayne who was lurking/goal hanging behind the defenders, to fluff a shot under the keepers foot into the goal.

The second half produced less to write about, with SV starting to flag, and nearly every pass being to a Holc stick or intercepted because of a lack of pace. Adrian “I’ve not slept for 24 hours and had at least 2 bottles of red wine on the flight back from Singapore” Gander continued to pile pressure on down the left hand side, but unfortunately Holcombe managed to exploit SV’s fatigue and score an equally as unimpressive goal as the one seen in the first half. Alex Stanford also managed to get a green card for trying to rape one of Holc’s midfielders, and then mouthing off about his lack of success. Seemingly it all began to fall apart when illustrious captain Nick Hall pulled up injured and substituted himself for Andrew Wishart, proving that we cannot play without our Braveheart-esque leader.

It was a good run out for both sides, and all played in good spirit. Now, forwards to promotion!
