Hard Battle for Sutton Valence 3rd XI

Hard Battle for Sutton Valence 3rd XI

Robert Cockayne

Ashford juniors press hard

Another unseasonably warm October morning saw Ashford 6th XI making the short journey up the M20 to Sutton Valence’s new and reasonably untested Senior School Astro.

On paper, Sutton Valence 3rd XI were fielding a strong team, with diversity and agility across the pitch. The reality however was slightly different.

The game started in an upbeat manner from both sides, with some good passing play and breaks being made from both sides. Both sides had a number of breaks, however Sutton Valence were looking the more threatening with some lovely one-twos between Dan Brooks and Chris Johnson in the middle of the park splitting through the less experienced youth players from Ashford (whom it should be noted did not drop their heads or give up at any point). Treacherous turncoat Lewis Mitchell assisted Ashford in holding back a barrage of attacks, mainly through foul play, resulting in Sutton Valence not able to capitalise on any opportunities.

Eventually, Sutton Valence were granted a short corner, which was rapidly injected by Chris Johnson to Rob Cockayne, whose strike at goal hit the keeper’s kickers and was elevated beyond the reach of the Ashford defenders. Half time soon arrived, with both teams having many points of their game to work on.

The second half was a rather different state of affairs, with Sutton Valence struggling to string passes together, and Ashford really stepping up their game. The young players of Ashford started to play some very nice hockey, making a number of high paced attacks and strong passes. A number of crosses ended up going across the goal, and they were unlucky not to be tucked in. One notable save came from stand in goalkeeper Mark Whitmill, with a CR7 bicycle-esque clearance, much to the astonishment of all.
The game continued in the same manner until the final whistle, much to the frustration of Ashford.

Credit should be noted to the number of up-and-coming Ashford youth players for their skills, pace and grit throughout the game. Well done lads.
