Top of League on goal difference

Valence travelled to Holcombe on a cold but dry (so far) November Saturday looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season. Following a delay with the previous game the match started quickly to avoid a clash with the all-important Holcombe Ladies 1st XI, with little time for the players to warm up and no time for the keeper to face a single ball.
Valence started the game well and applied early pressure to Holcombe, pinning them back in their own half and working the ball into the corners before looking to play into the Holcombe D. Through a combination of greedy forwards and dogged Holcombe defence however, Valence were unable to break the deadlock until late on in the first half when a mis-controlled short corner led to a melee in the D before Rob Cockayne found the target from close range.
The half time team talk focussed on the usual themes of short passing instead of thumping the ball long hoping the forwards could control the ball which was proving difficult on a bobbly pitch.
Valence dominated much of the possession in the second half with some excellent passing moves all over the pitch, which allowed them to exploit the space being left as the opposition tired. Valence conceded 1 soft goal, which disappointed defence and keeper alike, but Marius Dreyer provided not one but two good finishes to cement Valence's deserved victory after producing some of the best passing hockey that has been seen from the team in many years. One sparkling moment towards the end of the game saw Valence seamlessly transfer the ball from the left-hand side of midfield, around the back 3 and down the right-hand side to the attacking 25. It was the stuff of Andrew Wishart’s dreams, just a shame he was not there to witness it.

MoM: Every single player on the Valence team played really well making it near impossible to pick a MoM.
