Sutton Valence travelled away to Herne Bay with the bare 11 players but started the match strongly, showing determination with sharp passing and good movement around the pitch.
Unfortunately, against the run of play, Sutton Valence lost possession in their own half which allowed Herne Bay to exploit space at the back post and tap in the opening goal.
To their credit, Sutton Valence picked themselves up quickly and continued to push forward, producing some lovely passages of play but were unable to convert their chances. Herne Bay capitalised before the half-time whistle, scoring twice more through their quick-footed young players to make it 3–0 at the break.
Sutton Valence again started the second half with grit and determination. However, with the away side pushing high up the pitch, Herne Bay were able to find space again and added a fourth goal.
Sutton Valence showed great character in response. The ball was played up to Rob Cockayne on the edge of the D, who struck a powerful shot across goal and into the far corner to make it 4–1.
With renewed confidence, Sutton Valence pushed Herne Bay back into their own half for much of the remainder of the game. Their pressure eventually forced a penalty corner. Ryan Page injected the ball to Rob Cockayne, who collected it and unleashed a drag flick into the top corner — a strike of World Cup quality that flew past both defender and goalkeeper.
Sutton Valence continued to push for a third goal, but time — and the Herne Bay keeper — were against them as the final whistle sounded.
Not the result Sutton Valence wanted, but it was a well-spirited and entertaining game.
