Tough season opener for Sutton Valence 3's

The first league match of the season saw newly promoted Sutton Valence 3rd XI travel away to face Gravesham & Wellcome 3rd XI.

Sutton Valence knew they were in for a tough match, with G&W attacking persistently from the off. It took a few minutes to find their structure, but Sutton Valence resiliently kept the attacking opposition at bay, with debutants Zak Blanchard and Mike Stapleton putting in strong performances alongside the experienced defensive gladiator that is Mike Nettle, and out-of-position David Turner.

Frustratingly, Sutton Valence were seldom able to break out of their half, despite the best efforts of the dynamic midfield duo of Alex Stanford and Stuart Edmed. G&W managed to pull ahead halfway through the half with a well-finished flick past goalkeeper Ross Mackay.

With the second half sun relentless beating down on them, the sun-stroked Sutton Valence team had a momentary 15-minute meltdown, conceding three further goals in quick succession.

Nevertheless, the team picked themselves up and continued to battle right until the final whistle, with Ryan Page close to scoring, only to be denied by the G&W keeper.

A 4-0 win for G&W, but the team have identified many positives to build on for the next fixture, including the introduction of four new players to the squad.

Onwards and upwards.
